The historic city, platted in the late 1800s by Ezra Meeker, is in the urban and fertile Puyallup Valley, almost equidistant from the outdoor wonderland of Mount Rainier National Park to the south and the world-class City of Seattle only 40 miles to the north.
Puyallup (pronounced Pew-Al-Up ) is an Indian word meaning “generous people." The thoroughly modern city retains a small-town charm. Neighbors still greet each other on the sidewalks during their evening strolls. Farmlands and forests still stretch along parts of the city’s boundaries. Trees that were living at the time Columbus sailed to the continent in 1492 are still growing in virgin forests a mere two-hour drive to the east.
